What We Do

Lifestyle habits are important to us. We plan and coordinate annual management and preventative activities that enhance the health of the general public.

Take Charge of Your Diabetes (TCYD)

Our TCYD programme is centred around beneficiaries who are affected by diabetes and providing them with the tools and guidance to manage this lifestyle disease.

To initiate the programme, the Prevention Unit contacts clinics and doctors around the island to recommend patients for the programme and receive nutrition therapy.

Beneficiaries who have enrolled in the programme will go through several weekly sessions. To ensure participants success, they are required to report on their progress and any difficulties encountered while adjusting to the programme’s conditions.

The proof is in the program, Take Charge of Your Diabetes!

Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) & School Outreach Programs (SOP)

More and more children are being diagnosed with diabetes, and hypertension conditions only thought to occur in older adults. As a result, these children will enjoy a poorer quality of life as they become adults. However, there is a way to arrest this trend.

Healthy lifestyles will prevent the onset of these diseases or help keep these diseases under control in children already diagnosed. Eating healthily and engaging in regular physical activity are the keys to healthy living.

Our programs include:

  • MBS PAN Skip Rope Competition
  • MBS PAN Smart Dollar Recipe Competition
  • Aerobics

Health Talks & Seminars

The Medical Benefits Scheme Prevention department hosts annual health talks and seminars focused on lifestyle diseases and other ailments that affect our bodies and everyday life. The talks are held to empower persons to manage their diseases through proper nutrition and exercise.

Topics of discussion are generally focused on the eleven non-communicable diseases to which the MBS provides coverage. These diseases include:

  1. Asthma
  2. Cancer
  3. Cardiovascular Diseases
  4. Certified Lunacy
  5. Diabetes
  6. Epilepsy
  7. Glaucoma
  8. Hypertension
  9. Leprosy
  10. Parkinson’s
  11. Sickle Cell Anemia

Health Run/Walks

As advocates of adopting healthy lifestyles to improve public health, our Prevention Unit host annual WALKS/RUNS/RIDES to encourage the nation to stay active.

Significant research proves that exercise can help to reduce the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases.

Connect with us on our social platforms to find out when we will host our next public event.

Public Screenings

To properly navigate a ship, you must understand its coordinates. This is also true in maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. This is why we are fixated on the mantra that every person should “Know Your Numbers.” This is why we offer regular free public screenings across all corners of the country to tests for:

  • Hypertension
  • Cholesterol
  • Blood sugar
  • Blood pressure
  • Height & Weight – Body Mass Index (BMI)

The information gathered from these screening events assist in planning future programmes which target areas where beneficiaries are being affected.

Planning A Healthy Diet

Six Diet planning principles that must be considered when planning your next meal includes:

  • Balance: This means that you should prepare food in proportion to each other and proportion to the body’s needs.
  • Adequacy: This means that the diet should provide nutrients, fibre, and energy in amounts enough to maintain health.
  • Calorie Control: Watch those calories! Select foods that have more nutrients. The amount of energy from foods should balance with the amount of energy you use for physical activity.
  • Nutrient Density: Select foods that give you the most nutrients for the least energy.
  • Moderation: Don’t overeat! Eat enough but not too much food.
  • Variety: Eat a wide selection of food items from the food groups.

Believe it or not, you are what you eat!!! So eat well and eat wisely.
